Elementary School Program Position Summary The Director of Special Education (Elementary) provides leadership, coordination, and oversight of special education services across the elementary program. The position is responsible for supporting special education staff, coordinating the Committee on Special Education (CSE) process, monitoring student records and compliance, coordinating related services, and ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate services in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), school policies, and applicable federal and New York State requirements.

The Director works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, related service providers, families, and other school personnel to ensure effective delivery of special education services and to support positive academic and developmental outcomes for students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Coordinate and facilitate CSE meetings for the two elementary school buildings, Clare and Doat.

Support special education teachers with instructional planning, implementation, progress monitoring, and IEP development.

Provide guidance and professional development to special education staff.

Coordinate elementary special education data collection, monitoring, and reporting.

Manage special education teacher caseloads and schedules to ensure appropriate student coverage and service delivery.

Coordinate related services and assist with related-service billing and documentation.

Maintain accurate student special education records, caseload information, and service documentation.

Complete and submit required Child Find and Exit Forms.

Complete and submit required New York State PD-6 and PD-8 reports.

Coordinate and support Student Support Meetings.

Complete and maintain BPS Student Intervention Records and coordinate appropriate referrals.

Monitor special education documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

Ensure that IEPs and related special education documentation are implemented and maintained appropriately.

Monitor special education timelines and assist staff in meeting required procedural and compliance deadlines.

Collaborate with teachers, administrators, related service providers, families, and outside agencies as appropriate.

Provide consultation and problem-solving support regarding student needs, instructional strategies, accommodations, and special education services.

Assist with identifying students who may require additional academic, behavioral, or related-service supports.

Maintain confidentiality of student records and sensitive information in accordance with applicable laws and school policies.

Stay current with federal and New York State special education regulations, procedures, and reporting requirements.

Support the school in maintaining compliance with applicable special education laws, regulations, and policies.

Perform other special education leadership and administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree required;
Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, School Psychology, or a related field preferred.

Appropriate New York State certification or credentials in special education or a related educational field.

Administrative or supervisory experience in special education preferred.

Knowledge of New York State special education regulations and CSE procedures.

Experience with IEP development, special education compliance, student data, and related-service coordination.

Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, caseloads, and compliance requirements.

Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, service providers, students, and families.

Demonstrated commitment to supporting students with disabilities and promoting an inclusive educational environment.

Work Environment The Director of Special Education works primarily in an elementary school setting and may work across multiple school buildings. The position requires frequent collaboration with school administrators, special education staff, general education teachers, related service providers, students, and families.
