Tenure-Track Faculty (Assistant or Associate) Position in AI for Material Science
FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTHunter College is pleased to announce a faculty search as part of the CUNY Martin S. Spergel Initiative, supported by the Simons Foundation. The Department of Computer Science at Hunter College of The City University of New York invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, beginning in August 2027. Exceptional candidates seeking appointment at the rank of Professor may also be considered.
The Department seeks candidates with a strong research record at the intersection of artificial intelligence and materials science, with particular interest in researchers developing novel AI methods and computational approaches that advance materials discovery, modeling, design, and experimentation. Priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate a strong record of interdisciplinary research and collaboration with experimental scientists.
Located on Hunter College's 68th Street campus on Manhattan's Upper East Side, the Department of Computer Science provides an open and collegial environment in which faculty work closely with students and collaborators across Hunter College and CUNY.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Novel AI methods, including approaches beyond conventional machine learning, for accelerating molecular and materials research.
AI methods for scientific discovery, knowledge generation, and optimization of materials and processes.
AI-accelerated modeling of strongly correlated electronic systems.
Predictive modeling of self-organizing and bioinspired materials.
Autonomous and AI-guided experimental workflows for materials discovery and characterization.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish and sustain a robust, externally funded research program; contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring; develop new educational programming at the intersection of AI and materials science; and participate in departmental and College service. The candidate will also be expected to collaborate with experimental researchers to translate computational advances into practical laboratory applications and to foster multidisciplinary research and educational partnerships across Hunter College and CUNY.
The position builds on Hunter's strengths in artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, cybersecurity, and computational modeling while leveraging CUNY's broader research ecosystem. This ecosystem includes the Advanced Science Research Center ( ASRC ), the ASRC CAT program supporting academic-industry partnerships, Empire AI , and the NSF-funded AI-BIOME Cloud Lab , which provides a platform for developing and deploying AI-driven autonomous experimentation and closed-loop materials discovery.
Faculty in Hunter College's Department of Computer Science are generally eligible for appointment to the doctoral faculty of the Computer Science Program at the CUNY Graduate Center, providing opportunities to teach doctoral courses and advise Ph.D. students.
QUALIFICATIONSPh.D. (or foreign equivalent) in computer science, or closely related field.
Preferred QualificationsStrong research record in AI for scientific discovery, particularly in materials science, chemistry, or closely related fields.
Expertise in developing novel AI methods to accelerate scientific discovery, such as applications in materials and molecular discovery, design, and prediction, using approaches such as generative modeling, representation learning, or structure–property modeling.
Experience developing AI-guided scientific workflows, including autonomous experimentation, agentic AI, tool-augmented models, or closed-loop discovery…
