University Professor, Academic
Bard Graduate Center announces a faculty search for an Assistant Professor in Design History. Preference will be given to advanced junior candidates who have completed one major research project. Ph.D. is required and must be conferred by the start date. We understand design broadly to encompass the conception, making, and use of objects and the shaping of material environments across all historical periods and regions, including Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
Relevant fields for design history may include interiors, furniture, and domestic life; dress and textiles; craft and material processes; architecture and the built environment; consumption, collecting, and display; and industry and technology. Research may focus on particular places and traditions or examine connections across regions through trade, migration, and colonialism. We welcome candidates whose work brings queer studies or disability studies into dialogue with material culture and design history.
Candidates should also be able to teach and advise beyond their specialization in order to explore design history within global contexts and engage with diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. Successful candidates will have some experience teaching and advising graduate students and interest in pursuing public scholarship.
