Job Summary

We are hiring a Power Plant Operator at our Ravenswood, NY plant. The role is onsite only. The position reports to Operations Supervisor or Operations Manager. Starting pay ranges from $48.65 to $53.18 per hour, with potential to increase to $65.77 within 2 years through training and advancement. The Operator is a multidisciplinary technician who:

  • understands plant equipment and processes;
  • uses basic tools and has basic mechanical and electrical maintenance skills;
  • reports to the Shift Supervisor and follows direction from the Control Room Operator;
  • completes inspection rounds, records and adjusts parameters, performs basic maintenance while on watch, applies and removes LOTO, acts as fire and confined space watch as needed, and performs additional tasks assigned by the shift supervisor.
  • The job requires rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, and working in all weather conditions without question. Job Functions
    • Assist or lead in starting, operating, and stopping the plant, and respond to abnormal or emergency conditions while complying with safety and environmental requirements.
    • Continuously monitor system and component conditions to determine plant and equipment performance.
    • Operate all plant equipment to meet dispatch requirements and report issues to Control Room Operator, Shift Supervisor, Maintenance or Direct Manager.
    • Lead in conducting acceptance and performance tests on existing or new plant equipment.
    • Perform emergency activities to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment.
    • Control plant evolutions to ensure safe, effective conduct and compliance with policies and procedures.
    • Plan and lead basic mechanical maintenance duties such as predictive and preventive maintenance, replacing basic parts (filters, gaskets, etc.), adjusting valve packing, changing oil, and other minor maintenance tasks.
    • Open, close, rack, reset, and perform routine maintenance on breakers and switch gear up to 345 kV.
    • Provide direction and oversight to temporarily assigned personnel, including subcontractors on plant operations and maintenance matters.
    • Conduct basic troubleshooting and analysis on indication and control equipment.
    • Collect, analyze “trending” information, and provide recommendations on equipment performance and forecast possible failures.
    • Participate in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
    • Maintain assigned working locations in a neat and orderly condition.
    • Complete other tasks as requested by Operations Manager or Direct Report.
    Education and Experience
    • High school graduate or equivalent, with trade school, related military service training, or technical training. Additional professional training is preferred.
    • Minimum of 3 years experience in power generation facilities, process plants or equivalent military experience. Additional experience with machinery repair and control systems is preferred.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain all required licenses as mandated by agencies.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Basic math skills, good verbal communication, and proficiency with power and precision tools.
    • Can work independently and cooperate with coworkers.
    • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions for operating and maintaining power plant equipment and machinery.
