Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Materials Science Engineering

A postdoctoral research fellowship is available under the direction of Prof. Scott Misture, the LaNore Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Alfred University. The work focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and properties of oxide ceramics for applications in energy storage and energy conversion.

Salary: $65,000

Postdoctoral positions are available in two main areas:

  • Study of redox-active oxides, such as those used in cathode and anode layers in solid oxide fuel cells. This includes in-situ studies using electron microscopy (SEM and S/TEM), diffraction, scattering (including total scattering), and Raman or IR spectroscopy.
  • Synthesis and structural studies of complex oxides with large structural blocks, such as titanate shear phases, framework oxides, and tunnel-structure oxides, which may be used in ion adsorption and electrochemical applications. This requires atmosphere-controlled synthesis and detailed characterization, much of which can be conducted using in-situ techniques and property measurements.

    • The researcher will also mentor undergraduate and graduate students and participate in outreach activities for pre-college students. Mentoring responsibilities will align with the candidate's career interests, with additional opportunities for career development for those interested in academia.
