Responsibilities
  • Use mathematical skills to perform complex measurements, complete fast and accurate calculations, analyze and verify data, and confirm surveying measurements.
  • Use evaluation and problem‑solving skills to complete required job tasks.
  • Build maps, sketches, and charts. REPLACE WITH:
    Prepare and maintain data, charts, plots, records, documents, legal descriptions, sketches, maps, and reports related to land surveys.
  • Utilize specialized equipment, including distance measuring wheels, GPS, and GIS devices to accurately measure land features, elevations, property lines, boundaries, contours, variations in ground gradients, and determine plot locations.
  • Analyze data using plans, maps, charts, and software such as AutoCAD and GIS programs.
  • Capture and collect GPS data on underground utilities and trees of significance.
  • Translate ARC points onto the field.
  • Provide survey points for various construction projects, including elevations for lawn crypt installation.
  • Assist with construction staking or site‑layout surveys, take measurements of distances and angles, mark and delineate boundaries and reference points on a property or section of land; stake site‑layout surveys that outline the locations of proposed structures.
  • Collaborate and work with project managers, construction crews, field crews, and contractors.
  • Provide guidance to field staff.
  • Collaborate with engineers and architects on several projects.
  • Provide technical expertise to other individuals in the company.
  • Perform topographic and as‑built surveys.
  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, and reports of legal descriptions of surveys.
  • Research and consult historical maps and surveys, as well as legal documents related to the property or section of land being measured.
  • Examine previous records and evidence to ensure data accuracy.
  • Maintain detailed organization and time‑management skills to work on multiple projects simultaneously and successfully.
  • Present data to management and prepare reports.
  • Report on survey results and present findings to management.
  • Bring up and discuss recommendations and proceed as instructed.
  • Resquare blocks and plot markers, as needed.
  • Build a surveying team and develop an understudy.
  • Continue enhancing skills by taking certification courses and participating in training programs.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field, and a state certification or licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor.
  • Minimum five years of experience as a surveyor.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Experience using hand surveying tools (distance measuring wheels, plumb bobs, levels) and electronic surveying tools (transit levels, GPS equipment).
  • Working knowledge of software such as AutoCAD and GIS programs.
  • Analytical thinking, reasoning, and problem‑solving skills and understanding of mapping concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills to communicate with management, employees, and vendors.
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience training and managing a crew.
  • Physical stamina as the job requires walking long distances, at times in undeveloped areas, while carrying field equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours during the week, weekends, holidays, and peak season.
Skills
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and GIS software.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, presentation, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent mathematical skills to conduct land survey analysis.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of land surveying.
  • Proficient with computerized mapping technologies and surveying instruments, and the computer applications and software used to process field data.
  • Ability to prioritize and re‑prioritize as situations and needs change throughout the workday.
  • Ability to multitask and organize workflow to manage daily responsibilities.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and specific time frames.
  • Detail‑oriented.
