Tugboat Engineer – Carver Companies

Key Responsibilities- Oversee the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems aboard the vessel.
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on engines, generators, pumps, and other onboard systems.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, engine logs, and fuel usage.
- Ensure all engineering operations comply with U.S. Coast Guard and environmental regulations.
- Monitor critical systems and respond promptly to mechanical or technical issues.
- Work closely with the Captain and crew to support safe vessel operations.
- Manage inventory and requisition parts, supplies, and tools as needed.
- Participate in safety drills and emergency response procedures.
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard DDE 4000 HP license (minimum required).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a marine engineering role aboard tugboats or similar vessels.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, and marine machinery.
- Familiarity with fuel systems, HVAC, steering, and bilge systems.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and maintenance procedures.
- TWIC card and current Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) required.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Experience working in the New York Harbor or similar high‑traffic marine environments.
- Familiarity with EPA Tier‑compliant engines and modern marine control systems.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically fit to work in confined engine spaces and onboard marine vessels.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and perform hands‑on mechanical work in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
