Substation Project Structural Engineer
HDR Engineering seeks a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our nationally ranked Power Delivery team. The engineer will design structural components for high‑voltage switchyards and substations up to 500 kV, working closely with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams across multiple office locations. This role involves mentoring junior staff and advancing our technical capabilities.
Responsibilities- Design and analyze rolled steel, lattice framing, and folded‑plate tubular steel members, including detailed calculations and development of fabrication and loading drawings.
- Develop foundation designs using drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other methods with industry‑standard software.
- Prepare or review construction and material specifications.
- Assign tasks to EITs and guide non‑structural team members.
- Perform quality checks and reviews to meet HDR Quality Management System (QMS) requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Mentor and train EITs and designers.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects with teams in different locations.
- Participate in project reviews as needed.
- Travel may be required.
- Experience designing high‑voltage electrical switchyards and substations of varying complexity.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, and related industry standards.
- Proficiency with PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalent software.
- Minimum five years of technical design experience for high‑voltage substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Working knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318, and other industry standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized in the state of employment.
- Previous structural engineering experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar.
- Experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.
