OverviewTectonic is actively seeking experienced, full-time Resident Engineers for upcoming MTA Transit projects (NYC Transit, Metro North Railroad, Long Island Rail Road, Staten Island Railway, Bus, etc.), as well as for upcoming NJ Transit and Amtrak projects. Base pay range$/yr - $/yr
Responsibilities- Provides professional engineering and construction oversight services on multiple rail transit design-build and/or construction projects, acting as Client’s representative in the field with directly managing contractors, vendors, utilities, owner labor-forces, and other external parties on projects involving rail transit systems, including rail infrastructure elements such as stations, facilities, shops, yards, signal systems, communication systems, power systems, bridges and viaducts, tunnels, track systems, drainage, structural elements, fare payment systems, vertical transportation systems, security systems, and associated work.
- Supervises, coordinates, and tracks all field site activities and provides technical advice on construction and design; implements corrective actions to resolve issues.
- Responds to requests for information from contractors by interpreting plans and specifications; documents contractor performance.
- Regularly reviews and approves engineering design, plans, shop drawings, product data, and other construction-phase submittals/deliverables.
- Reviews contractor payment applications and recommends approval or rejection to the owner.
- Reviews validity of contractor-submitted change orders.
- Leads on-site Field Engineers and Inspectors.
- Schedules all field staff to ensure full shift coverage, coordinates Special Inspection and Testing needs, and reviews/approves daily inspection reports.
- Implements and follows company/owner/project-specific safety and quality protocols; participates in safety and quality meetings and audits as required.
- Monitors project progress in accordance with contract cost and schedule; conducts progress meetings as required.
- Ensures all project documentation is completed and submitted as required; completes necessary project close-out processes.
- Coordinates and executes contractor access and protection requests including track outages, foul time, property access requests, flag protection, and force-account labor.
- Assist or lead management of project staff; performs related Resident Engineering and Project Management duties as required for successful project completion.
- Valid Professional Engineering License in the State of New York with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent; equivalent years of rail transit experience in a Resident Engineering or Management role will be considered in lieu of a PE license; PE licenses from other US states also considered.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience on rail transit projects with leadership experience (minimum 2 years).
- Experience with rail transit systems such as NYC Transit, LIRR, Metro North, Amtrak, NJ Transit, PATH, PATCO, Staten Island Railway, or related agencies; freight rail experience considered for select projects.
- Ability to understand and interpret written specifications, plans, and construction documents for work orders and build documents.
- Effective communication with clients, supervisors, office staff, and inspectors regarding project status and issues, drawings, specifications, and qualification test results.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to detect non-conformities and prepare detailed reports in a timely manner.
- Experience interpreting and supervising the execution of rail and construction industry standards (national and owner-based).
- Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites preferred.
