Controls Engineer - System Architect

We are currently searching for a Controls Engineer - System Architect to join our Industrial Engineering department of the Marquardt Group, located in Cazenovia, USA.

The Controls Engineer – System Architect is a technical lead on a software controls team responsible for production manufacturing equipment. The role is hands‑on, defining and implementing automation controls on key projects while mentoring team members. Responsibilities span the project life cycle, from quote and concept to implementation and acceptance testing.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Design and develop automation controls that meet customer technical/functional specifications, manufacturing cost/efficiency requirements, and Marquardt best practices.
  • Mentor team members on controls methods, software architecture, and problem resolution.
  • Contribute to cross‑functional design reviews and lessons learned.
  • Lead standardization activities within the department, conduct code reviews, and champion best practices.
  • Contribute to equipment commissioning quotes, schedules, and timelines.
  • Perform proof of concept studies for new equipment and processes, including calculations, modeling, or simulations to assess feasibility and propose changes.
  • Support in‑house pre‑production builds and Factory Acceptance Testing.
  • Collaborate with other Marquardt facilities to promote best practices in controls design and programming.
Production Support
  • Implement engineering changes and update documentation, software, and related materials.
  • Coordinate Maintenance department training and documentation.
  • Transfer troubleshooting knowledge to Maintenance so production can support equipment.
  • Prepare spare parts definitions and documentation.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for assigned equipment currently in production to improve future design.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Other activities, projects, and experiments as assigned.
  • Product improvement and cost‑reduction proposals.
  • Project status planning and reporting.
  • Occasional travel to support domestic or international equipment installations.
Required Qualifications
  • 15+ years of relevant experience, including college‑level coursework.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (preferred).
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and communicate controls designs, including system diagrams, component diagrams, and logic flow charts.
  • Experience with PLC programming (structured text, function‑block diagram, flowchart‑based languages).
  • Experience with industrial robot programming and simulations.
  • Familiar with organizing systems into testable and reusable subsystems.
  • Familiar with code reuse and version control.
  • Familiar with Beckhoff IPC/PLC and components (a plus).
  • Ability to mentor and lead technical discussions, supporting team growth.
  • Ability to collaborate and create manufacturing automation solutions.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
