Job Summary and Essential

Job Duties

The Optical Manufacturing Engineer position will join a small growing team and is responsible for developing and improving manufacturing processes for optical components and assemblies by studying product and manufacturing methods. This hands‑on role works on manufacturing and measuring / metrology of precision optics and contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes by designing and conducting development projects; apply knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; confer with equipment vendors; solicit observations from operators.
  • Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; research, design, modify, and test manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods; test finished optical product and process capabilities; establish standards; confirm manufacturing processes.
  • Complete design and development projects by training and guiding technicians.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; review professional publications; establish personal networks; participate in professional societies.
  • Perform other duties as outlined by the Engineering Manager.
Advancement

Advancement within the Manufacturing Engineering ranks is attained via increasing levels of responsibility and demonstration of leadership potential and effectiveness combined with added education, experience, industrial skills, math skills, computing skills.

Education Requirements
  • B.S. Degree in Engineering or Applied Science required
  • Experience working in manufacturing environments preferred
Minimum Requirements
  • Knowledge of optical manufacturing including optical component fabrication and/or systems desired but not required
  • Knowledge of 3D CAD software desired
  • Experience with MES (mfg. execution system) software desired
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate technical details to both internal and external customers
  • Possess good communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Enthusiastic, cooperative and positive behavior
Work Requirements Physical Demands
  • Compliance with cleanroom protocols, including refraining from smoking or vaping 30 minutes prior to entering the cleanroom.
  • The job may involve prolonged periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
Work Environment
  • This position is in a clean manufacturing environment. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud frequencies.
  • Required to work occasionally in a class 5 or higher cleanroom environment
  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • May require area specific safety training
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes
