Near Space Labs is leading the next generation of Earth imaging. We design, build and operate a fleet of proprietary, stratospheric balloons called Swiftys. Our Swiftys fly to the edge of space to deliver high quality, highly updated imagery of our planet at down to earth prices.

We are looking for a hands-on, mission-driven Reliability and Maintenance Technician to join our team in Brooklyn, NY. This role reports to the Fleet Performance & Maintenance Team Lead, and is a key part of our commitment to keeping our fleet of stratospheric robots flight-ready, safe, and reliable.

As part of the Manufacturing department, you’ll work closely with our Flight Operations and Engineering teams to ensure that every Swifty unit is maintained, diagnosed, and refurbished according to our performance and quality standards.

Location

This is an onsite, full-time role in Brooklyn, NY.

Your responsibilities will be

  • Provide technical support to Flight Operations teams before and after flight missions.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and document issues identified in returned Swifty units.
  • Perform routine maintenance, refurbishments, and component replacements.
  • Execute inspection and test procedures to verify system readiness.
  • Assist in maintaining the spare parts inventory and tooling.
  • Contribute to process documentation, feedback, and continuous improvement.
  • Follow safety and quality procedures, and propose enhancements where needed.

Your Skills & background

  • Hands-on experience in maintenance, manufacturing, or diagnostics in Robotics, Aeronautics, Drones, Automotive, or IoT hardware systems.
  • Experience in mechanical assembly, electronics soldering, cable crimping, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with tools and technologies such as:
  • Oscilloscopes and multimeters
  • 3D printing
  • Cameras, lenses, and optics
  • Strong attention to detail and process-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of technical issues.
  • Comfortable working with documentation systems, reading and interpreting technical drawings, and contributing to logs and checklists.
  • Vocational or technical training (e.g., FAA A&P certificate, Associate's Degree in Technical Maintenance, Engineering Technology, or related field, or Vocational Certificate) is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $45,000 - $95,000 salary range depending on location and experience;
  • 25 days annual Paid Time Off;
