the nyc department of environmental protection (dep) enriches the environment and protects public health for all new yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. Dep is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. Dep’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.

The responsibility of maintaining these vast networks falls under the department of environmental protection’s bureau of water and sewer operations (bwso). The environmental health and safety (eh&s) division strives to ensure long term environmental health and safety compliance and fully integrate the understanding of effective eh&s policies and practices at all levels of the organization. The bureau of water and sewer operations (bwso) is seeking to hire a candidate for the title of industrial hygienist ii in the division of environmental health and safety (eh&s).

The industrial hygienist ii is responsible for assisting the bureau of water & sewer operations’ environmental health and safety (eh&s) division in the development, maintenance, and improvement of effective and comprehensive environmental, health and safety initiatives. Assignments will include identifying worker and environmental risks by performing eh&s inspections, assessments and audits, conducting research, and educating personnel on safe work practices. Activities will include a mix of office and field work at various locations throughout the city of new york.

responsibilities
  • conduct environmental, safety and health inspections and assessments to ensure full compliance with federal, state and city environmental and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • conduct research and review occupational safety and health administration (osha), public employee safety and health (pesh), nys department of environmental conservation (dec), and other regulations and policies.
  • perform job safety analyses and provide recommendations for engineering controls and personal protective equipment (ppe).
  • conduct health and safety monitoring and investigate injury and illness accidents/incidents.
  • assist in the implementation of successful corrective actions associated with audits, environmental release reports, accident reports, and notices of violation.
  • assist in the implementation of standard operating procedures (sops).
  • conduct applicable employee training; schedule and maintain records of training sessions.
  • participate in special projects related to the improvement of ehs programs.
  • perform field work at various locations in the city of new york.
  • prepare and submit complete and accurate reports.
  • track and maintain various records.
  • respond to emergencies as needed.
    *** all candidates must be either permanent in the civil service title of industrial hygienist or must file for and pass the upcoming civil service exam for industrial hygienist (exam no. 6064, which is open for filing 12/3/2025 – 12/23/2025) to be considered***
industrial hygienist – 31305 qualifications
  • a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering; or
  • a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in the physical or natural sciences, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and/or toxicology and one year of satisfactory, full‑time experience in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards; or
  • a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full‑time work experience as described in “2” above; or
  • a combination of education and experience that is the equivalent of the course work and/or experience described in “1”, “2”, and “3” above. Semester credits from…
