OverviewThe NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides 1.1 billion gallons of high‑quality drinking water, manages wastewater and storm water, and reduces air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution for New Yorkers. With nearly 6,000 employees, DEP maintains a 2,000‑square‑mile watershed that spans 125 miles north and west of the city.
Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC)BEDC oversees a portfolio of capital projects worth $35 billion now and $13.6 billion in the next ten years, ensuring the water supply system remains exemplary.
Team and ProjectsThe Wastewater Capital Program (WWCP) staff designs and constructs major projects for the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT). Current initiatives include sustainable upgrades, resiliency enhancements, and repairs of sewage pump systems, solids handling facilities, power systems, combined sewer overflow abatement, and pump stations.
ResponsibilitiesBEDC seeks an Assistant Project Manager for the WWCP directorate in Queens, NY. The role includes:
- Preparing, negotiating, and processing modifications to consultant contracts in scope, cost, and schedule.
- Assisting project team members with program schedules, reports, and work products.
- Serving as design and construction support staff, ensuring Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) integration throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinating with BEDC support groups (Project Controls, Permit Resource, etc.) and client service bureaus.
- Communicating with agency bureaus, city agencies, and stakeholders to resolve issues and mitigate risk.
- Monitoring budget, schedule, and contract metrics, and reporting key performance indicators.
- Conducting field investigations and developing solutions to field‑site challenges.
- Managing contract documents and procurement activities.
- Robust knowledge of wastewater treatment systems and equipment.
- Understanding of codes, standards, and design guidelines for wastewater facilities.
- Capability to read and interpret engineering reports, specifications, and drawings.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, sustainable design, urban planning, or related field and one year of full‑time project‑management experience for engineering, architectural, or landscape architectural projects.
- A four‑year high‑school diploma or equivalent and five years of experience as described above.
- A combination of education and experience that equals five years, with one year of credit for each 30 semester credits of college education toward a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
