The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high‑quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees.

Within DEP, the Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion forecast over the next ten‑year commitment plan. Bedc’s Wastewater Capital Program (WWCP) oversees the design and construction of all major capital projects for the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT). Current projects include sustainability upgrades, resiliency improvements, and major infrastructure repairs such as main sewage pump systems, solids handling facilities, power systems, combined sewer overflow abatement, and pump‑station rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

BEDC seeks to hire an Assistant Mechanical Engineer to serve as an Assistant Project Manager for the WWCP directorate in Queens, NY. Under supervision, the selected candidate will be an integral project team member responsible for achieving project goals and milestones, ensuring that all prepared program schedules, reports, and work products conform to the program scope of work. The candidate will support the project team in preparing, negotiating, and processing appropriate modifications to consultant contract scope, cost, and schedule;

will serve as design and construction support staff ensuring that Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is incorporated throughout the project lifecycle; will develop client service focus with operating bureaus; and will coordinate with BEDC support groups such as Project Controls (Schedule & Cost) and Permit Resources. They will also develop seamless communication with agency bureaus, other city agencies, and key stakeholders, resolve issues, mitigate risks, and manage quality of project delivery while continuously monitoring key performance indicators related to budget, schedule, and contract metrics.

The selected candidate must demonstrate critical thinking skills and effective independent data analysis and will be expected to possess excellent oral and written communication skills, meet deadlines, and adapt to flexible assignment of responsibilities.

Selected candidates may be required to work extended days occasionally and will perform fieldwork that may involve standing and walking on uneven surfaces, steep slopes, and stairs in all weather conditions. The position also requires operation of a motor vehicle to conduct site visits, equipment testing, inspections, and attend meetings with project stakeholders.

Preferred Skills
  • Robust knowledge of wastewater treatment systems and equipment
  • Knowledge and understanding of codes, standards, and design guidelines applicable to wastewater treatment facilities

  • Excellent communication and writing skills
