Duties DescriptionThe Professional Engineer 1 will work in the Capital Delivery section or in the Design Services section of the regional Design unit.
Duties- Managing in-house Design teams, and/or managing Consultant teams in the development of project scope, preliminary engineering, and final design.
- Producing biddable contract plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Delivering projects on-time and on-budget.
- Preparing and maintaining project schedules using P6 (Primavera).
- Developing/reviewing design reports.
- Obtaining permits.
- Supervising several engineers and technicians.
- Coordinating with Regional and Main Office functional groups, coordinating with the public and with other agencies.
- Reviewing contract plans, specifications, and estimates, and providing comment and guidance to designers to ensure project quality.
- Keeping up to date on State standards to maintain quality relating to the roles listed above.
- Learning and using necessary software to support the roles listed above (such as Estimator and AASHTOWare Project Preconstruction for Estimating and Spec Tracker for Special Spec Coordination).
- Keeping track of project Bid Results and Price Trends relating to project estimates.
- Supervising several Engineers and Technicians performing different roles.
- New York State Professional Engineer’s license and current registration.
- A qualifying bachelor’s degree in any of the following:
Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees. - One year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.
- Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) is a continuous recruitment examination for promotional candidates only. All interested promotional candidates must complete their online application.
- Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
- This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
