The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking an experienced Environmental Engineer to support the Kesselring Site Environment, Safety and Health organization as it works to identify, proactively prepare for, and adapt to new requirements related to Emerging Contaminants.
Emerging contaminants, such as Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have become integrated into our day to day lives in ways that the industry is only beginning to understand. The rapidly evolving regulatory landscape and the continuous development of our understanding presents a dynamic and exciting challenge for a new environmental engineer to develop and implement policies and practices that will help position the Site and the Program to effectively and efficiently adapt to the changing regulatory environment.
To accomplish these objectives, this role will interface with Environmental Engineering peers and other Site stakeholders to ensure considerations related to Emerging Contaminants are adequately understood and integrated into Site practices. As a member of the Environmental Engineering team, this role may be assigned additional responsibilities related to other environmental topical program areas based on individual experience and the needs of the business.
This presents a unique opportunity for this role to coordination with Site project teams to ensure support for managing Site regulatory compliance and investigatory/remedial work under the Corrective Action program are effectively balanced.
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience;
or Currently an Principal Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.
- Experience interfacing with external regulators (e.g., NYSDEC, NYSDOH, EPA)
- Experience with PFAS and related regulatory considerations
- Project management experience
- Broad experience in environmental program areas (such as RCRA, CWA/SPDES, CERCLA, TSCA, and CAA/Air Program)
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and benchmark across Program sites
- Working knowledge of environmental investigation/remediation practices
- Working knowledge of spill reporting and cleanup practices
- Experience reviewing and interpreting regulations and proposed rule making actions
