Head of Engineering l Hardware & Mechanical | Robotics & AI | New York City
I’m working with a small robotics and AI company building autonomous systems for real-world manufacturing. They’re developing robot-learning technology for complex manipulation tasks and need a hands on Head of Engineering to lead the hardware and mechanics behind it..
This is a hands-on senior individual-contributor role. You’ll set the architecture for robotic data-collection platforms, end effectors and customer workcells, then help take those systems from prototype through testing, production and deployment.
What you’ll work on- Design and improve grippers, custom fingers, tool interfaces and other manipulation hardware.
- Architect complete workcells across robot arms, cameras, sensors, compute, power, fixtures and safety systems.
- Build reliable data-collection hardware that supports robot learning across different tasks and sites.
- Lead design reviews, validation, failure investigations and technical decisions across disciplines.
- Work directly with deployment teams and customers to commission systems and solve problems in the field.
You’ll likely have 8+ years in robotics, automation or complex electromechanical hardware
, strong mechanical design and CAD skills, and a track record of owning systems from early requirements through deployment. You should be comfortable both setting technical direction and getting hands-on with prototypes, test data and field troubleshooting.
Experience with robotic manipulation, end effectors, industrial workcells or hardware for teleoperation and robot learning would be especially relevant.
The team works in person in New York City
, with travel to customer sites as needed.
