Quantum Hardware Intern: Cryogenics & Qubit Research

IBM Quantum is leading the way to build useful quantum computers taking advantage of the latest methods in quantum error correction. Scaling up these systems to the sizes required for fault tolerance will require a change in how quantum computers have been built to date. IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, NY is uniquely storied to help in this endeavor having been key to advances in classical computing from signalling, DRAM memory and communications throughout its more than 60 years of history.

Joining IBM Research as an intern will give you access to a vibrant academic and industrial environment to build your career and help change the future!

Your role and responsibilities

You will be working on quantum hardware, electrical and mechanical studies for improving the reliability and scaling (RESCALE) our quantum systems. Good hands, excellent attitude and a sharp mind are required. There will be weekly updates to senior colleagues and other interns so communication is a big part of this.

Required education

Bachelor's Degree

Preferred education

Master's Degree

Required technical and professional expertise

• We seek a graduate student working in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or a related field with expertise in cryogenics, experimental quantum computing or adjacent fields.

• Superconducting materials or qubit experience, quantitative electromagnetic simulation experience, ways to compensate for CTE mismatch under 300 deg C excursions, and precision assembly.

IBM Research is the organic growth engine of IBM and an innovation engine for our customers and partners. As part of this mission, IBM Research anticipates and examines 'What's Next in Computing' to ultimately create and integrate the technologies the world relies upon to solve big challenges and unlock new opportunities. We create and pioneer new markets for IBM, our partners and customers as exemplified in our ongoing quest to reach practical and large-scale quantum computing.

Across IBM Research, we realize the power and potential to accelerate discovery with our partners and clients by combining the power of high performance computing, AI, and Quantum, all integrated through the hybrid cloud.

In a world where technology never stands still, we understand that, dedication to our clients success, innovation that matters, and trust and personal responsibility in all our relationships, lives in what we do as IBMers as we strive to be the catalyst that makes the world work better.
