Organizational context:
The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) Office of Investment Management (OIM) manages over $100 billion in a global, multi-asset class portfolio, with approximately 85% actively managed in-house. The OIM is based in New York and comprises staff from over 40 countries. This Senior Investment Officer role is within the Fixed Income Team, reporting to the Director of Fixed Income.
Job purpose:
This role provides leadership, decision-making, and accountability for the credit portfolios within the Fixed Income Team. The primary objective is to achieve superior investment returns against benchmarks without undue long-term risk. This involves conducting in-depth analysis of credit markets, economic trends, and regulatory frameworks, performing bottom-up investment research, and recommending asset allocation and specific security transactions. The incumbent will also plan and oversee unit activities, formulate investment policies, manage the work program, and contribute to strategic discussions and reporting to intergovernmental bodies.
The role requires managing, supervising, and developing staff, fostering teamwork, and representing the organization in relevant forums.
Provide leadership and decision-making for credit portfolios to achieve superior investment returns and manage risk. Conduct fundamental, valuation, and technical analysis of credit markets, economic trends, and regulatory frameworks. Perform bottom-up investment research, including primary research through sector and company visits. Recommend asset allocation and strategies within the credit complex, and implement security transactions. Plan and oversee unit activities, ensuring timely execution of work programs and resource allocation.
Formulate investment policies and strategies for fixed income credit portfolios. Manage, supervise, and coordinate the work program of the unit, ensuring high-quality output. Prepare reports and position papers for intergovernmental bodies, including performance reviews and strategy discussions. Lead special projects to enhance investment decision-making and performance. Evaluate advice from external advisors and managed funds. Carry out administrative tasks, including performance monitoring, budget reporting, staff recruitment, development, and performance evaluation.
Foster teamwork and represent the organization in interagency meetings and conferences.
An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Economics, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted as an alternative.
Work experienceRequires a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in fixed income investment within pension funds, public funds, insurance, foundations, endowments, or sovereign wealth funds. A minimum of 10 years of experience managing investment-grade or high-yield corporate portfolios or conducting fundamental corporate credit research is necessary. Additionally, at least 5 years of experience managing a fixed income portfolio with assets under management of at least USD 2.5 billion is required, along with demonstrated experience in managing ESG and carbon-constrained investment-grade portfolios.
