Overview
Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO). U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers a career in law enforcement with a large, collaborative team dedicated to protecting America, safeguarding borders, deterring illicit activity, and supporting economic prosperity. You will be part of the Department of Homeland Security workforce with job stability, good pay, and benefits.
Responsibilities- Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
- Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
- Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances.
- Determine admissibility of individuals entering the United States.
- Prevent illegal entry of people and prohibited goods and deter smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.
You will be asked to provide a preference for one of the mission-critical locations. Incentives may be available for some locations. If a duty location does not have vacancies at the time of offer, you may be offered a duty location in another geographic area. Locations offered are based on operational and mission needs for entry-level CBPOs as determined by the CBP Office of Field Operations (OFO).
Salary,Location Incentives, and Benefits
- Annual base salary for newly appointed CBPOs varies: GS-9 $ 61,111 - $124,443 per year. Locality pay varies by duty location.
- A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to starting salary.
- Career ladder with grades GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, GS-12. Promotions to the next grade occur after successful completion of 52 weeks in each grade (subject to agency discretion).
- Federal benefits include health and dental insurance, paid leave, sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement plan).

Some duty locations offer 15%–25% of salary for the first 3 years (and 25% for San Francisco for up to 4 years) in addition to overtime pay.

:
Experience, education, or a combination.- Experience: At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including:
- Detaining suspected violators and enforcing laws related to importing, exporting, and international shipping.
- Using intelligence techniques and risk assessments to identify threats and violations of laws.
- Conducting interviews to obtain information and determine appropriate action.
- Education substitution: Master’s degree or higher, or two or more years of graduate study, or Juris Doctor/LL.B. from an accredited institution.
- Combination: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education.

- Citizenship: U.S. citizen.
- Residency:
Primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years. - Age:
Eligible for law enforcement retirement provisions; refer for selection before age 40, with certain exceptions. - Veterans’ Preference:
May be eligible for VRA; age restriction may not apply for Veterans' Preference eligible. - Formal training:
Paid pre-academy orientation for ~2 weeks, followed by a 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy at FLETC; some locations require online Spanish training.
