Position: Investigative Officer 1/Trainee (Public Work Wage)
Location: New York

Investigative Officer 1/Trainee (Public Work Wage)

New York State Department of Labor is seeking a dedicated Investigative Officer 1/Trainee to enforce prevailing wage laws on public work construction projects. The role requires travel, occasional overnight stays, and must be able to drive in New York State.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce Articles 8, 8A, and 9 of the New York State Labor Law to ensure prevailing wages.
  • Gather information to set prevailing rates and investigate proper work classification.
  • Inspect payroll records and jobs for compliance and underpayment allegations.
  • Prepare and testify at administrative hearings and courts for criminal infractions.
  • Travel to conduct field investigations and perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of qualifying experience or an Associate’s degree and two years of qualifying experience; or a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Five years of qualifying experience; or an Associate’s degree and three years of qualifying experience; or a Bachelor’s degree or higher and one year of qualifying experience.
  • Experience in construction project management, prevailing wage record‑keeping, payroll administration, HR administration, labor relations, budgeting, accounting, project inspection, MWBE compliance, safety compliance, or OSHA coordination.
  • Investigation experience defined as gathering and securing evidence from independent, non‑structured activities.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet transportation needs.

  • Base salary $65,000‑$68,000 (range may vary by location).
