Job Overview

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest fire department in the United States and is recognized as the world's busiest, most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for citizens, visitors, and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. The Bureau 24/7 identifies fire and life‑safety hazards; creates, revises, and enforces the New York City Fire Code; reviews plans for critical systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licenses qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems;

certifies individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; and educates the public and businesses about fire safety. The Bureau works closely with the Bureau of Fire Operations (Firefighters) and the Bureau of Fire Investigations (Fire Marshals) during post‑fire incidents and investigations, and coordinates with other City agencies on fire and life‑safety matters. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers who work together to save lives in New York City.

The FDNY seeks a full‑time Deputy Chief Inspector for the Bureau of Fire Prevention’s Suppression unit. The Deputy Chief Inspector reports directly to the Chief Inspector of the Suppression unit and oversees the testing, inspection, and maintenance of water‑based suppression systems (Standpipe and Sprinkler). These systems safeguard occupants and firefighters during suppression operations. The Deputy Chief Inspector directly supervises and trains all lower‑level Inspectors within the command structure, reviews and, if necessary, covers field Inspection work when Inspectors are on leave, approves time‑keeping issues, conducts quarterly and annual evaluations of subordinates, and maintains rules for Inspectors such as the Code of Conduct and attendance policies.

The position also involves interagency meetings and coordination with other FDNY units to address variances or code interpretations for senior leadership of Fire Prevention.

• Oversee testing, inspection, and maintenance of standpipe and sprinkler suppression systems.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate all lower‑level Inspectors.
• Review field inspector work and, when necessary, cover and witness suppression testing.
• Approve time‑keeping and conduct quarterly and annual evaluations of subordinates.
• Maintain and enforce Inspectors’ Code of Conduct, attendance, and other regulatory rules.
• Coordinate meetings with other agencies and FDNY units concerning code variances and interpretations.

• Five (5) years of full‑time experience in or more of the following:
  • The manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables.
  • The development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials.
  • The inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored, or housed to detect potential fire and explosion hazards.
  • The design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems.
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.
