Correction Officer Trainee

Correction Officers are responsible for the custody and security, as well as for the safety and well‑being of incarcerated individuals in the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) correctional facilities, shock incarceration correctional facilities, work release centers, and drug treatment campuses.

All applicants are subject to drug screening, criminal background and reference checks, and a medical exam.

Correction officer positions are located throughout New York State in various facilities of the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Under the direct supervision of a higher‑ranking officer, you will be responsible for custody, security, and the safety and well‑being of criminal offenders in state correctional facilities. Your duties will include supervising inmate movement and activities; making periodic rounds of assigned areas;

conducting searches for contraband; maintaining order within the facility; preparing reports as necessary; advising inmates on rules and regulations; assisting them in resolving problems; and, where required, carrying firearms.

The Correction Officer Trainee examination provides an opportunity to apply and compete in a Department of Civil Service test using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire evaluates your education, certification, licensure, and experience. Information from the questionnaire is used to review qualifications and serves as the test for these titles.
