Program Coordinator & Technical Assistance

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation’s largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other equipment.

The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from city streets.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct outreach to New York City schools receiving DSNY service.
  • Oversee the coordinated development of informational materials, online tools, and public education strategies aimed at promoting recycling and organics diversion in New York City schools.
  • Manage online tools, workflow processes, and communications pertaining to recycling programs; gather and analyze related operational and educational data regularly.
  • Research, evaluate, and make recommendations on program implementation and operational planning.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations on the status of programs and the results of research studies.
  • Serve as a Department liaison with New York City schools.
  • Develop contacts within city government and with other recycling and waste management professionals.
  • Provide support for other Bureau functions as needed; may require evening or weekend work as relevant.

COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community‑centered activities related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community‑centered activities related to the duties described above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to options 1 or 2; however, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in option 1.
Preferred Skills
  • Extensive knowledge of New York City, its schools, and/or agencies.
  • Experience in public outreach and education with both adults and children.
  • Extensive knowledge of New York City waste management and containerization laws.
  • Experience developing programs enabling New York City agencies and institutions to comply with laws and policies.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, writing, and data management skills.
  • Proficiency in word processing and data management applications including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and basic customer relationship management platforms.
  • Fluency in a foreign language (Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Hebrew, or others).
  • Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

Residency Requirement:
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
