Problems You’ll Solve

The Policy Advisor for Living Streets and Public Spaces will play a pivotal role in the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice (MOCEJ), focusing on creating more resilient, sustainable, and livable public spaces across New York City. With a particular emphasis on addressing extreme heat challenges, this position will work to transform streets and public spaces into climate-resilient assets that enhance community well-being, advance equity, and foster strong partnerships with communities affected by environmental challenges.

Key Responsibilities Community Engagement and Outreach
  • Lead the development and execution of public engagement strategies related to street and public space improvements, including heat resilience initiatives.
  • Organize and participate in community engagement activities to identify neighborhood-specific needs and priorities for public space enhancement.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community organizations, civic networks, and advocacy groups to promote sustainable and resilient public spaces.
Data Analytics and Research
  • Design and implement sophisticated data analysis frameworks to evaluate public space usage, environmental conditions, and intervention effectiveness.
  • Develop predictive models to inform public space planning, including considerations for extreme weather events.
  • Create data-driven recommendations for program improvements and resource allocation.
  • Develop and manage databases and dashboards to track project metrics and outcomes.
  • Use GIS and other analytical tools to map environmental conditions and assess the effectiveness of interventions.
Project Coordination
  • Independently manage complex, multi-stakeholder projects focused on street and public space improvements from conception to completion.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans including risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
  • Lead the development of best practices and standard operating procedures for public space transformation initiatives.
  • Monitor project progress, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and case studies highlighting project impacts and best practices.
Representation and Communication
  • Represent MOCEJ at community meetings, public forums, conferences, and interagency collaborations.
  • Develop and distribute communication materials to explain climate resilience strategies and MOCEJ initiatives to diverse audiences.
