Scrub LPN/Certified Surgical Technologist-Full Time

Job Title: Certified Surgical Technologist Department:
Surgical Services

Reports to: Director of Surgical Services

Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

The Certified Surgical Technologist assists in providing nursing care and preparation of surgical patients of all ages appropriate for the surgery unit. Provides services under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services or their designee, and in accordance with the objectives, policies, and procedures of the nursing department and established professional standards. Functions as a member of the sterile team.

Effectively interacts with patients, healthcare members, while maintaining AORN (Association of Operating Room Nurses), AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) and NBSTA (The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) standards of professional care delivery. Services include, but are not limited to: scrubbing for orthopedics, urology, general, OB GYN, ophthalmology, ENT, podiatry, and endoscopy.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a sterile field;
    Communicate maintenance of sterile field.
  • Use principles of aseptic practice in varying situations including, but not limited to:
  • Initiate corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
  • Inspect sterile items for contamination before opening.
  • Maintain sterility while opening sterile items for procedure.
  • Anticipate the need for equipment and supplies based on patient/procedure needs, using physician preference card.
  • Perform gown and gloving of surgeon and assistant using aseptic technique.
  • Anticipate surgeon’s need for instruments and suture to facilitate procedure.
  • Select equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner.
  • Assure all equipment is functioning before use.
  • Operate mechanical, electrical and air powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Remove malfunctioning equipment from service; communicate need of repair/replacement.
  • Follow established policies and procedures for counts.
  • Initiate corrective action when counts are incorrect.
  • Handle; collect and label specimens accurately per policy.
  • Assist with update of surgeon preference cards regularly as needed.
  • Perform duties in a timely manner to minimize turnaround-time.
  • Reprocess, wrap and sterilize items per policy as needed.
  • Perform high level disinfection per policy as needed.
  • Sign report of operative procedure for count documentation as needed.
  • Assist with room turnover for cleaning or disposal of instruments, supplies, linen, and reuse per policy.
  • Orient new staff to scrub as assigned.
  • Use and maintain all equipment, as specifications require, in order to perform job functions.
  • Demonstrate cost-effective awareness in use of resources and supplies.
  • Maintain proper level of stock and supplies as department requires.
  • Utilize techniques of body mechanics for patient and personal safety.
  • Maintain a safe environment for staff and visitors.
  • Follow hospital infection control procedures and standard precautions per policy.
  • Works effectively and communicates frequently with all members of the health care team.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all patient, hospital, and physician related information; demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient/client information.
  • Follow chain of command appropriately to resolve problems and concerns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies located in the operating room.
  • Excellent and organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as active listening skills.
  • Professionalism and business acumen appropriate for working with guests, physicians, employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to cost effectively manage resources and supplies
