Job Summary

Direct Support Assistant – Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, NY State.
Salary Grade 09;
Salary Range From $52,225 to $56,413 annually.
Full‑time, permanent, competitive class.

Location:

TBD, Cortland County, NY 00000.
Variable work hour: 40 hours/week, 12 AM – 12 AM.
Mandatory overtime required. No telecommuting or flextime.

Duties
  • Provide supports and services to individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Advocate, encourage, guide and teach individuals in expressing personal choice.
  • Ensure community integration.
  • Assist individuals with personal hygiene care, toileting, dining, dressing, meal preparation, lifts, and transfers.
  • Help individuals participate in games and recreational programs.
  • Coach and encourage individuals to develop daily living skills.
  • Provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
  • Work with other staff to carry out care plans and record care plans.
  • Administer medication in accordance with special instructions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency such as GED or DSP certificate from an accredited public or private organization.
  • Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State; must maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
  • Must meet physical and agility standards.
Additional Comments

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). It may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment. Employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to convert to permanent competitive status within one year of permanent appointment.

Starting salary reflects increased hiring salary and geographic pay differential. Posted hiring salary includes statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($42,641), increased hiring salary ($5,584) and geographic pay differential ($4,000). Geographic pay differential added to job rate ($52,413).

If you are a current NY State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee.

Local Bidding Agreements will be honored for CSEA positions.

Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures. Please indicate this on your resume.

All OPWDD employees must be eligible for full and unconditional participation in Medicare and Medicaid programs. Continued employment will depend on maintaining eligibility.
