Position: Patient Care Assistant, FGP - New Hyde Park - Pulmonary
Location: New York

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) in the FGP Pulmonary practice at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. The PCA supports administrative and patient‑care responsibilities to enhance practice workflow, including reception, registration, and patient escorting, while performing clinical tasks within the NYS scope of practice.

Job Responsibilities
  • Greets patients and completes check‑in and check‑out processes as needed.
  • Answers phones and schedules appointments.
  • Addresses questions or routes calls/messages to the appropriate contact.
  • Supports efficient patient workflows by escorting patients to exam rooms and preparing rooms for provider visits.
  • Validates patient medical records per FGP guidelines when accessing and/or updating information.
  • Takes vital signs and records them in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Assists with the collection of lab specimens.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Completes intake, including vital signs and other tests within the defined scope of practice.
  • Follows guidelines for validating patient medical records.
  • Maintains patient flow to and from exam/treatment rooms.
  • Ensures rooms and areas are cleaned per infection‑control standards after each patient.
  • Communicates the functionality and purpose of MyChart to patients during intake.
  • Ensures appropriate translation services or equipment is in place before visits.
  • Preps the patient encounter, ensuring all relevant information is up to date.
  • Utilizes EPIC to review and update patient records and communicate with peers and supervisors.
  • Assists providers with procedure set‑up and stocking exam/treatment rooms.
  • Maintains patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA.
  • Document outcomes of patient communications and manage in‑basket messages.
  • Facilitates clinical quality documentation and equipment maintenance.
  • Completes annual competencies such as Fire Safety, Hazardous Waste, Med Sled, and HIPAA compliance.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Welcomes patients and performs intake, including registration, form collection, and co‑payment collection.
  • Monitors the Department Appointment Report for appointment anomalies and insurance flags.
  • Gathers patient demographic data and verifies insurance eligibility electronically.
  • Collects required sign‑offs for HIPAA and other policies.
  • Enrolls patients in Patient Secure and promotes kiosk use.
  • Scans documents into Epic following best practices.
  • Monitors waiting areas and communicates wait times.
  • Performs check‑out functions and schedules follow‑ups.
  • Answers calls professionally and schedules routine appointments.
  • Documents and releases medical records per HIPAA and ROI guidelines within ten days.
  • Maintains cleanliness of patient and office space and restocks supplies.
  • Communicates with physicians, nurses, and staff using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by providers and supervisors.
Patient Experience and Access
  • Acts as NYU Langone Health Faculty Group Practice Brand Ambassador, upholding mission, vision, and values.
  • Embodies the FGP Service Strategy CARES framework during every encounter.
  • Greets patients warmly and explains each step of care.
  • Collaborates with colleagues and site management to resolve patient inquiries promptly.
  • Applies the LEARN model to address patient needs and escalates appropriately.
  • Shares ideas to improve patient experience and access.
  • Partners with Patient Access Center and Central Billing Office to support collaboration.
  • Ensures staff are versed in the Access Agreement gold standard principles.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High‑school graduate or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of English in verbal, reading, and writing.
  • Computer skills.
  • At least one year of experience as a Patient Care Assistant or Medical Assistant within the last two years.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks efficiently and thrive in a team environment focused on positive patient care.
  • Proficient in communicating with all levels of the organization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical Assistant certification.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and phlebotomy.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this role is $55,755 annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, education, specialty, and hospital needs.
