As an Ophthalmic Technician you will assist physicians in a variety of clinical and administrative duties, including patient preparation, room setup, basic vision screenings, medication administration, instrument maintenance, and support during minor surgical and laser procedures.
Job Duties & Essential FunctionsPatient Interaction & Clinical Intake
- Greet and communicate with patients and families in a respectful, caring manner.
- Initiate patient evaluations by accurately documenting chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent information.
- Coordinate and obtain prior authorizations for medications in accordance with insurance requirements.
Pre-Exam & Diagnostic Testing
- Perform pre-exam testing: visual acuity assessment (pinhole & glare), confrontational fields, extraocular muscle testing, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, angle assessment, and dilation.
- Conduct advanced diagnostic testing: OCT, fundus photography, IOL Master, Pentacam, A-scan, B-scan, Wave Scan/Vario, keratometry, lensometry, visual field testing.
- Perform specialized testing: color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, optical biometry, refractometry.
Procedure & Treatment Support
- Assist with in-office minor surgical procedures and laser treatments.
- Complete prescription refill requests as authorized, ensuring proper documentation in the patient chart.
- Track, document, and communicate laboratory results to physicians and patients promptly.
- Educate patients on medication use and provide pre- and post-operative instructions.
- Assist with contact lens fittings and instruction on insertion, removal, and lens care.
Equipment & Inventory Management
- Maintain inventory of ophthalmic supplies, pharmaceuticals, and instruments.
- Inspect and assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment; report damage and coordinate repairs.
- Assist with cleaning surgical instruments in preparation for sterilization.
- Properly shut down and clean diagnostic testing equipment as needed.
- Check and record refrigerator temperatures daily; monitor supply dates and manage inventory.
Clinic Readiness & Administrative Support
- Open and close exam rooms daily, cleaning equipment, charging devices, and securing instruments.
- Assist with opening and closing the clinic as needed.
- Follow all safety protocols and clinic procedures.
- Monitor and respond to work emails; use shared tools such as Google Drive to stay informed.
- Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations by safeguarding patient privacy.
Professional Development
- Participate in training and educational opportunities, including webinars and in-service sessions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification required or enrollment within one year and completion within two years of hire.
- Strong customer service skills with a professional and friendly demeanor.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities.
- Skilled problem-solving with strong attention to detail.
- Comfortable engaging in face-to-face interactions with patients and staff.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Rotating schedule – days, evenings, and weekends.
- Up to 10 hours weekly.
