Overview
The Clinical Specialist/Optometric Assistant is a part‑time role at Visionworks of America. The primary responsibility is to support onsite and remote eye examinations by preparing patients, conducting pre‑exam diagnostic tests and ensuring a positive patient experience.
Essential Responsibilities- Complete patient registration, gather and submit pertinent data including medical and ocular history into EMR.
- Assist the on‑site optometrist with patient care and eye examinations; clearly explain testing procedures and document results.
- For remote appointments, conduct remote eye exam procedures: pre‑testing, specialty testing, initiating and coordinating video conferencing between patients, remote technicians, and optometrists.
- Transition patients to retail associates after examination, conveying doctor recommendations.
- Communicate Medicare or other insurance plan benefits to patients.
- Pre‑authorize insurance according to standard operating procedures.
- Schedule appointments, manage exam books, contact patients for no‑shows and cancellations.
- Maintain patient flow to allow for doctor effectiveness.
- Triage ocular emergencies, schedule annual eye exams, answer clinical questions in person and by phone.
- Document complete and accurate patient records and maintain data integrity in EMR.
- Educate patients on contact lens insertion, removal, cleaning and handling.
- Order diagnostic contact lens trials and coordinate dispensing.
- Keep a clean and safe environment: maintain equipment, supplies and cover equipment nightly.
- Participate in specialized training and obtain required clinical certifications.
- Adapt to flexible schedules, including travel to other Visionworks locations.
- Minimum of one (1) year related experience in optical or healthcare support.
- Optical or healthcare background preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic training provided by Visionworks.
- Patient advocate with excellent customer service skills.
- Effective communicator and team player.
- Detail oriented, organized and able to multitask under pressure.
- Energetic, self‑motivated and problem‑solving.
- Ability to read and interpret insurance forms.
- Familiar with electronic data entry and software platforms.
- Proficient in English reading skills.
- Work changing schedules, including travel between stores.
- Use computers, tablets and pre‑testing instruments.
- Frequently lift or move up to 20 lbs.
- Frequently stand, walk, reach, bend and use hands/fingers.
- Fair noise level in locations (moderate).
All associates must comply with HIPAA (1996) and company privacy & security training. Access to PHI, cardholder data or confidential information requires strict data protection compliance.

Compensation and BenefitsPay Class:
Part Time, 20‑29 hours per week. Pay Rate: $18‑$27 per hour. Competitive pay and benefits include incentive pay, wage upgrades, overtime opportunities and a shared benefits portfolio. Union collective bargaining agreement applies to eligible positions.
