Field Based Peer Specialist – Substance Abuse Service Center
The Bowery Residents' Committee is seeking a Field Based Peer Specialist to support clients with substance use disorders in the shelter system.
Responsibilities- Participate in a two‑person team with the Field Based Social Work Supervisor
- Collaborate with shelter staff to address client needs
- Meet with clients in assigned shelters and educate them on NARCAN, harm reduction, and safe use practices
- Engage clients during meals and recreation to provide peer support
- Escort and assist clients to SUD service providers and harm reduction providers
- Attend community meetings as assigned
- Collect data and write progress notes on services and referrals
- Report to the Field Based Social Worker and build rapport with shelter staff
- Provide emergency first aid/CPR assistance when needed
- Perform related duties as assigned
- Full‑time, 35 hours per week
- Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM
- 4 full days in field and 1 full day in office
- High school diploma or GED
- Certified Peer Specialist (CRPA) Certificate
- Knowledge of OASAS rules and regulations and ability to maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation
- Basic computer literacy required
- Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred
- Vaccination preferred but not required
The Fred Cooper Substance Abuse Service Center (SASC) is a licensed, Medicaid‑funded program that serves homeless or marginally housed individuals with alcohol and substance abuse problems. It provides a low‑threshold environment and supports clients, including those with dual diagnoses, in pursuing long‑term sobriety and stability.
