Overview
Under general direction, the Peer will work with the team to provide community-based support with a rehabilitation and recovery focus using shared lived experiences in NYS OASAS regulated programs. The Peer Worker will work as a fully integrated team member providing individual face-to-face services in the client’s home or community as specified in the service protocols. This work supports the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.
Responsibilities
- Provides in-person individualized support to individuals with mental health and/or substance use diagnoses.
- Serves as a role model, mentor, and advocate to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery.
- Provides strength-based rehabilitative and recovery-oriented services individually and as part of a team.
- Establishes trusting relationships with clients based on mutuality and positive regard during outreach and meetings.
- Supports clients in developing and implementing personalized recovery plans aligned with their needs and the Plan of Care.
- Shares personal experiences to foster hope and recovery.
- Coordinates services through collaboration with staff, providers, and family or friends of clients.
- Assists clients with entitlements and concrete services, advocating on their behalf.
- Participates in weekly supervision, staff meetings, and in-service trainings.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least two years of experience or volunteer work in a recovery-oriented setting
- Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or CRPA-Provisional for OASAS programs OR New York Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS) for OMH programs
- Knowledge of substance use disorder recovery process
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office
- Availability to travel within the catchment area and navigate public transportation
- Commitment to recovery-oriented systems of care
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and follow procedures
