Basic Function And Scope Of Responsibilities

The Trainer reports directly to the Project Coordinator of the LIU-Nassau County Training & Education grant, which will fund trainings, conferences and other educational activities around mental health, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities for healthcare providers and citizens of Nassau County. The Mental Health Trainer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering educational programs that promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and equip professionals and community members with the knowledge and skills to support individuals facing mental health, addiction and developmental challenges.

The trainer will conduct workshops, facilitate training sessions, and collaborate with key stakeholders to expand access to mental health education in Nassau County.

Key Responsibilities
  • Training and Education Programs:
    • Develop and facilitate continuing education courses focused on mental health, addiction, and developmental disabilities services for professionals and community members, as well as monitoring and reporting of data collected for each training event (e.g., registration, attendance, evaluations, etc.).
    • Deliver evidence‑based training programs, including:
      • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) – teaching participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.
      • Narcan Training – educating participants on recognizing opioid overdose symptoms and administering Naloxone.
      • Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) Presentation – providing an overview of Kendra’s Law and the outpatient treatment process.
      • Support major educational events, including:
        • Annual Town Hall on Behavioral Health Services – promoting awareness of mental health resources.
        • Being Awesome with Autism Annual Conference – providing tools and strategies for supporting individuals with autism and co‑occurring disorders.
        • Nassau County Behavioral Health Symposium – addressing stigma, raising awareness, and educating professionals and community members on mental health and wellness.
Program Development And Outreach
  • Collaborate with the Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, and Developmental Disabilities Services to expand training opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain training materials in digital and print formats.
  • Utilize a system for collecting feedback and evaluating training effectiveness.
  • Conduct program satisfaction surveys and needs assessments to improve and tailor future training initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications And Experience
  • Experience developing and delivering mental health and addiction‑related training programs.
  • Strong understanding of mental health policies, evidence‑based interventions, and community resources.
  • Ability to conduct in‑person, virtual, and hybrid training sessions.
  • Experience in event coordination and public speaking.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills.
  • Earned master’s or doctorate (preferred) in psychology, social work or a related field.
  • Five to eight years related professional experience, especially around training; and demonstrated data management and analysis skills.
Working Conditions
  • Typical office setting with privacy, required regular travel to various locations throughout Nassau County, and occasionally work hours will be required during nights and weekends.
Materials & Equipment
