Job Summary:
The Senior Perinatal Sonographer is an experienced professional with strong collaboration and leadership skills. In this role, the incumbent will support a collaborative team of sonographers by providing day-to-day guidance and mentorship and supporting quality assurance and control activities. As a member of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine sonography team, the incumbent will perform all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation, and archiving ultrasound images, and will be responsible for the care of the patient while in the ultrasound area.
Successful candidates will bring at least 3 years of relevant sonography experience, including exposure to and demonstrated high-level proficiency in a wide range of OB/GYN ultrasound exams including, but not limited to, gynecological, first trimester, fetal growth, biophysical profile, fetal anatomical survey, evaluation of multiples, doppler interrogations, and fetal procedures, according to department protocols and standards. They will also bring an ability and interest in mentoring team members, supporting quality and safety initiatives, and providing operational support to team leadership.

Job Responsibilities:
- Greet and interact with patients, visitors, and all faculty and staff.
- Perform confidential ultrasonography examinations:
- Review imaging requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Review all questionable orders with the physician.
- Independently perform gynecological, first trimester, fetal growth, biophysical, fetal anatomical survey, evaluation of multiples, and fetal procedure ultrasound examinations.
- Position patient and select appropriate options to ensure best-case imaging.
- Observe patient while in the ultrasound area for change in status and make appropriate intervention or contact primary care givers for instruction.
- Use cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information and images.
- Localize and recognize difference between healthy and pathological areas.
- Integrate diagnostic sonogram with patients’ history, medical records, and laboratory results, and adapt exams accordingly.
- Judge diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to physician for interpretation. Present and prepare preliminary ultrasound findings to attending physician for final report.
- Maintain log of ultrasound test findings.
- Offer detailed explanation of diagnostic procedures to patients and answer questions as appropriate. Prepare patient for testing.
- Ensure proper operation of equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and reporting equipment failures. Participate in inspections as requested.
- Perform clerical responsibilities associated with acquisition, processing, and archiving of patient records. Consistently and accurately complete documentation pertinent to the ultrasound examinations.

- Assist with onboarding and training of new or less experienced perinatal sonographers. Share knowledge and offers guidance/mentorship.
- May assist manager to ensure adequate coverage and address related issues as directed.
- Support development of standard operating protocols (SOPs).
- Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Bring safety and quality events, concerns and needs to debriefs/safety huddles. Collaborate with team members on quality-related projects.
- Assist manager on Quality Control and Assurance measures, including testing and auditing as appropriate.
- Increase transparency, encourage event reporting, and advance the safety culture.
Job Qualifications:
- High school graduate or equivalency.
- A minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience, including exposure to a wide range of cases.
- ARDMS certified and OB/GYN registered. Must maintain ARDMS credentials annually.
- High proficiency in a wide range of OB/GYN ultrasound exams including, but not limited to, gynecological, first trimester, fetal growth, biophysical profile, fetal anatomical survey, evaluation of multiples, doppler interrogations, and fetal procedures, according to department protocols and standards.
