This phlebotomist role is based at an outpatient patient service center in Arverne, Queens, and focuses heavily on pediatric patients. You perform high-volume blood collection, specimen handling, and related laboratory support while providing clear, courteous communication to patients and families. The position requires recent hands-on phlebotomy experience, strong venipuncture skills with straight and butterfly needles, and the ability to work comfortably with children and their parents in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities- Perform blood draws using straight and butterfly needles for a high volume of patients each day, including many children under age 10.
- Conduct pediatric venipuncture and heel sticks as needed, ensuring a child-friendly and reassuring approach.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients and parents, and provide instructions to parents for pediatric procedures.
- Collect blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and documentation.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.
- Follow detailed procedures for packaging specimens for transport, ensuring compliance with protocols to preserve specimen quality.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks related to specimen processing and equipment as needed.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain organized, complete records.
- Provide strong, professional communication with patients, families, and colleagues while maintaining a courteous and patient-focused demeanor.
- Contribute to a smooth workflow in a two-person site by managing time effectively and supporting colleagues during busy periods.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2+ years of recent phlebotomy experience, including routine blood draws.
- Proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles for venipuncture.
- Experience working with pediatric patients, preferably 2 years, and comfort with pediatric blood draws.
- Ability to perform or learn heel stick procedures, with a preference for 15 years of experience in heel sticks.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain procedures to patients and instruct parents.
- Reliable and punctual work habits, with consistent adherence to scheduled hours.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced outpatient environment seeing up to 50 patients per day.
- Attention to detail in matching requisitions to specimen tubes, labeling, and following laboratory protocols.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bilingual Spanish language skills are a plus but not required.
- Comfort working with pediatric children and maintaining a friendly, patient, and reassuring demeanor.
- Experience in outpatient phlebotomy settings is beneficial.
- Familiarity with specimen collection procedures for various sample types, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment and support a two-person site.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a high patient volume efficiently.
This role is based in an outpatient patient service center in Arverne, Queens, near Far Rockaway. The site operates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You work in a two-person site that typically sees 4050 patients daily, with a significant number of children under the age of 10 who often require butterfly needle draws.
