Location: New York

The Director collaborates with leadership and across all departments to design, develop, and implement effective staffing strategies and to continuously improve Riverdale Y's service, employee engagement, and overall staff experience. The Director will lead human resources functions including but not limited to recruitment, onboarding, terminations, performance management, compliance, employee engagement, benefits and leave administration. The Director also ensures the implementation of policies and procedures across the agency.

This role is hands‑on to manage staff feedback, grievances, and also provides full HR lifecycle support to union and non‑union staff.

Riverdale Y has approximately 58 full‑time year‑round employees and an additional 160 part‑time and 35 seasonal employees throughout the year, mainly in the summer for camps.

Responsibilities
  • Recruitment, engagement and retention initiatives that support the continued growth of the organization.
  • Continually evaluate and review HR practices, employee handbook, and policies to make recommendations to support the organization and the desired employee culture.
  • Oversee all aspects of employee relations; ensure policies are administered fairly and consistently by providing consultative, training and coaching support to directors and staff.
  • Ensure legal compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal employment laws, including but not limited to FMLA and ADA to minimize risk/exposure to the organization.
  • Conduct employee investigations and oversee all escalated employee issues, working with leadership to address and resolve.
  • Review and oversee unemployment and workers compensation claims.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the Riverdale Y employee union staff.
  • Oversee Human Resources communications, including updates for staff meetings and agency‑wide announcements.
  • Supervise HR Coordinator/Grants Administrator.
  • Analyze HR data and workforce metrics to inform decision‑making, track trends, and support continuous improvement in HR processes and strategies.
  • Facilitate talent development and training programs to foster employee growth, skill advancement, and leadership within the organization.
  • Assist the organization in strategic planning and play a key role in ensuring successful office culture.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business or related field preferred.
  • Certifications for Human Resource Professionals (PHR, SPHR, SHRM) preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an HR generalist/manager.
  • Proven HR experience in strategic hiring required.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to analyze and present information to staff.
  • Effectively delegate, train, and develop team members throughout the organization in HR related policies and procedures to implement across the agency.
  • Knowledgeable in the legalities of general business law in relation to HR and employee employment rights, including wage & hour laws, recruiting, and any other federal, state, or local laws.
  • Strong ability to develop relationships and partner with employees at all levels.
  • Extremely well organized and methodical in problem solving, documentation, and ability to manage multiple tasks and an ever‑changing work environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in working alongside executive leadership.
