About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy development, academic enrichment, social‑emotional learning, creative expression, leadership development, and community partnerships, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

MAP operates across multiple programs and divisions, including MAP Roots, MAP Connect, Promise Play, Promise Press, Thread & Promise, and Storytelling & Media. Our people—volunteers, interns, fellows, staff, and leaders—are central to our mission.

Why This Role Matters

The Chief Human Resources & Organizational Development Officer (CHRO) exists to ensure that MAP’s growth is ethical, humane, equitable, and sustainable. This role safeguards how people are recruited, supported, developed, and protected within the organization. The CHRO ensures that MAP never sacrifices dignity, safety, or care for speed or scale—and that our internal culture reflects the same values we uphold for the youth and families we serve.

The CHRO is a senior executive leader and strategic partner to the Chief Program Officer, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, Chief of Staff, and executive leadership team.

What You’ll Do

• Set and steward MAP’s overall human resources and organizational development strategy.

• Ensure HR practices are trauma‑informed, equity‑centered, and aligned with MAP’s mission and values.

• Oversee recruitment, onboarding, role clarity, training, and retention across all divisions.

• Guide development and implementation of HR policies, handbooks, and governance frameworks.

• Ensure compliance with NYC, NYS, and federal regulations relevant to nonprofit and volunteer operations.

• Oversee HRIS systems, records management, and data integrity with strong confidentiality standards.

• Lead organizational development initiatives focused on structure, communication, performance improvement, and culture.

• Support leadership development for managers, coordinators, and program leads.

• Partner with Legal, Policy, and Compliance teams to manage risk, ethics, and accountability.

• Establish systems for feedback, reflection, and continuous improvement.

• Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on people‑related decisions and organizational health.

• Mentor HR team members, specialists, and volunteers.

• Communicate HR strategy clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

• Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours.

• Take responsibility for performance improvement by strengthening systems, clarity, and care over time.

How MAP Supports You

• Clear executive scope, authority, and strategic voice

• Collaborative, values‑driven leadership culture

• Respect for time, capacity, and boundaries

• Trust‑based leadership rather than micromanagement

• Opportunities to shape long‑term organizational culture and systems

• Professional references and letters of recommendation

What We’re Looking For

• Senior experience in human resources, organizational development, people operations, or nonprofit leadership.

• Strong understanding of HR compliance, governance, and ethical people practices.

• Experience building or strengthening organizational systems and culture.

• Ability to lead with empathy, clarity, and accountability.

• Excellent communication, judgment, and systems‑thinking skills.

• Commitment to equity, accessibility, trauma‑informed practice, and volunteer care.

Bonus (Not Required)

• Experience with NYC‑based nonprofits or youth‑serving organizations

• Familiarity with labor law, nonprofit governance, or compliance frameworks

• HR certifications (SHRM‑CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR, or similar)

• Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred)

Commitment & Boundaries

• Volunteer role, approximately 8–12 hours per week

• Minimum 6–12 month commitment preferred

• Hybrid New York City and/or remote via Google Meet

• MAP prioritizes sustainability, clarity, and care over burnout
