Machine Learning Scientist

Responsibilities

• Reframe business and newsroom goals as machine‑learning tasks that deliver accurate predictions, relevant insights, and optimization.
• Adapt or develop algorithms when existing approaches are insufficient, implementing simple solutions when appropriate.
• Implement and deploy research with robustness, reproducibility, and consideration of risks and trade‑offs.
• Turn models into data products, collaborate with engineering teams, and integrate into company processes.
• Communicate complex ideas effectively to technical and non‑technical stakeholders across engineering, analytics, product, marketing, editorial, and leadership.
• Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

• PhD, MS, or equivalent with 2+ years of experience in machine learning, statistics, computational social science, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative/computational discipline.
• 2+ years of experience with open‑source machine‑learning or statistical analysis tools.
• 2+ years of coding experience in Python.
• 2+ years of experience in SQL and manipulating large structured or unstructured datasets for analysis.

• 1+ year of experience with recommendation systems, including content‑based methods using natural language processing.
• 1+ year of experience with deep learning architectures, embedding methods, and PyTorch or Tensor Flow.
• 1+ year of experience translating ambiguous business questions into machine‑learning problems.
• 1+ year of experience building data products, either internal or consumer‑facing.

$121,000 – $131,000 USD (annual base pay range).
