Executive Underwriter OR AVP, Underwriting Director – Surety

Zurich North America is currently seeking an Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director for the Core Contract Northeast Region Surety Division. This highly technical, market‑facing role requires substantial experience in Surety lines of business. The position is based in the upstate New York area and will require weekly travel to the region.

• Produce and underwrite new and renewal Surety business within delegated authorities.
• Manage a large book of prominent accounts and build relationships with agencies and brokers.
• Lead internal marketing and production efforts to support cross‑sell campaigns.
• Execute external marketing strategy and maintain high‑level customer service.
• Adhere to underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations and the Zurich Way of Underwriting.
• Operate within limits and authorities on assignments of varying complexity.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years in Underwriting or Market‑Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support OR
• Zurich Certified Apprentice (associate degree) and 3+ years in Underwriting or Market‑Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
• Zurich Certified Apprentice (associate degree) and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support AND
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Experience delivering quotes on time for new and renewal business.
• Effective teamwork skills.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years in Underwriting or Market‑Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice (associate degree) and 5+ years in Underwriting or Market‑Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice (associate degree) and 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support AND
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

• Bachelor’s Degree.
• In‑depth knowledge of Surety lines and legal/regulatory guidelines.
• Strong risk assessment and negotiation skills.
• Excellent broker relationships and customer‑service focus.
• Superior communication, active listening and needs‑analysis abilities.
• Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and filing regulations.

Salary and Benefits
Salary range: $98,500 – $215,000 (national average). Executive Underwriter: $98,500 – $130,000 with a 15% short‑term incentive bonus. AVP, Underwriting Director: $165,000 – $215,000 with a 20% short‑term incentive bonus.
