Overview

Join to apply for the Police/Law Enforcement Officer role at New College of Florida. The New College of Florida Police Department is under a Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Police Benevolent Association (PBA).

Salary additives are provided to sworn members selected for special assignments requiring class or certification. The following additional compensation schedule will apply, up to a maximum of three special assignments:

  • Field Training Officer, add $1.20 to base hourly rate
  • FDLE High Liability Instructor, add $1.20 to base hourly rate
  • Evidence and Property, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
  • Special Teams, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
  • Critical Incident Response Team, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
  • Peer Support, add $0.72 to base hourly rate

New College of Florida is located in sunny Sarasota, on the Gulf Coast of Florida—an area known for its award-winning beaches, turquoise waters, and arts and crafts attractions. Located about an hour’s drive from Tampa and St. Petersburg, Sarasota is an exhilarating coastal retreat.

New College invites applications for the position of Police/Law Enforcement Officer. The New College of Florida Police Department provides a full range of police services to the New College of Florida and University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus community. The Campus Police Department is a 24/7/365 agency with primary jurisdiction on and around the university campuses.

Responsibilities
  • Perform sworn law enforcement duties.
  • Patrols assigned area in a radio car; checks doors, windows and premises of unoccupied buildings or residences to detect suspicious conditions.
  • Conducts or assists in investigations of suspicious conditions, complaints or criminal activity.
  • Direct traffic, issue violation tickets, warnings, and other traffic enforcement duties as needed.
  • Stand for extended periods when directing traffic and controlling crowds.
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain) and potentially dangerous environments.
  • Some shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes; be certifiable as a law enforcement officer in Florida; and have one year of law enforcement experience. Military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required experience. Appropriate college work or vocational/technical training may substitute for the required experience.
  • Will obtain 911 telecommunications certification by the second year of employment.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with 60 or more semester hours of college coursework from an accredited college or university OR U.S. military personnel with two years of active service OR certified sworn law enforcement officers with one year or more of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-offer employment physical to include drug screen, psychological test, polygraph, background investigation, fingerprinting and valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Reimbursement for Equivalency of Training class fees negotiable.

Campus Police Officers are designated critical personnel who provide vital support to the campus and are subject to recall to work when deemed necessary by the Chief of Police/designee. Recall to work typically happens due to an emergency, disaster or special event that may coincide with the official suspension of classes and/or closing of office.
