Senior Liability Claims Examiner (Trial Prep Unit)

The Trial Prep Unit (TPU) Senior Claim Examiner is responsible for handling complex and high exposure litigated general liability bodily injury and property damage claims. This includes making coverage determinations, directing investigations, making liability determinations, evaluating damages and collaborating with defense counsel to ensure that all cases are properly prepared for a potential trial.

• Review and verify coverage throughout the life of a claim.
• Review and analyze various documents such as contracts, leases, condo/co‑op governing documents, the insured’s business records, public records, medical records, property damage scopes, etc.
• Conduct factual investigation directly or with the assistance of investigators.
• Maintain accurate and complete file notes.
• Maintain current and meaningful diary system.
• Set proper reserves timely; make fair and prompt settlement determinations.
• Negotiate settlements.
• Coordinate efforts with defense counsel to develop strategies and disposition plans.
• Ensure that all discovery, expert/IME, and motions are made timely and in accordance with the established defense strategy.
• Attend mediations.
• Follow all company and departmental protocols.
• Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as required.

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• CPCU, AIC, SCLA and other insurance professional designations preferred.
• Minimum 6 years of experience handling premises liability claims.
• Minimum 5 years handling litigated files.
• Minimum 5 years experience and an understanding of NY Labor Law (if handling NY claims).
• Minimum 2 years experience in handling other complex claims such as wrongful death, mold, drownings, negligent security, etc.
• Well‑versed in handling litigated files in the state(s) assigned; able to direct defense counsel and think independently.
• Capable of developing defense tactics and strategies.
• Familiarity with Image Right and Guidewire a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, good interpersonal, analytical and negotiation skills.
• Intellectual curiosity.
• Strong sense of urgency.
• Ability to establish relationships and rapport with insured’s brokers, attorneys, etc.
• Empathy with unrepresented claimants.
• Ability to travel occasionally, generally locally.
• Attain/maintain any licenses in states that require them if assigned to those states.

The salary range for this role is $86,800‑$160,700. The listed annual salary range posted for this position is subject to change and may vary depending on performance, education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, demonstrated proficiency in the competencies required for the role and business needs. Base pay is just one component of GNY’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards include eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus based on performance.
