Position OverviewThe Business Litigation Paralegal supports attorneys in complex litigation matters across multiple jurisdictions, including case research, document management, and client communication. The role is integral to the firm’s litigation practice and includes a billing component.
Responsibilities- Conduct research in online legal resource platforms (Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, PACER) and summarize legal sources such as case law, statutes, and law‑related publications.
- Coordinate case management from intake through resolution, anticipating attorney and client needs.
- Oversee case task lists and collaborate with the Docketing team to ensure accuracy of litigation deadlines.
- Manage litigation e‑discovery databases, perform searches, load transcripts, and code documents.
- Prepare deposition materials, including notebooks, and maintain deposition summaries.
- Organize and maintain large matter files, accurately saving correspondence, pleadings, discovery, and court transcripts to document‑management systems.
- Collect, organize, and Bates‑stamp documents for production; coordinate large‑scale document productions or multi‑jurisdictional filings.
- Retrieve public records from online resources or directly from government institutions.
- Draft and prepare legal documents appropriate to practice area.
- Fact‑check large briefs, applying Bluebook citation rules under tight deadlines.
- Utilize electronic court systems (U.S. District Courts, State/Circuit Courts) ensuring compliance with local rules; significant New York state procedure experience required.
- Perform paralegal duties as directed by group leaders and attorneys in the assigned substantive practice group.
- Adhere to ethical guidelines governing the practice of law.
- Receive and follow complex instructions, monitoring and meeting deadlines, establishing priorities, and communicating any challenges.
- Participate in training and professional development of other paralegals.
- Track and record client‑billable time and non‑billable hours, meeting the firm’s minimum billable hour requirement.
- Sound judgment and good discretion in handling sensitive information.
- Provide high‑quality client service to both internal and external clients.
- Prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail under pressure.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills; accept changing assignments and priorities.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Excellent grammar, punctuation, and proofreading skills.
- Motivated self‑starter thriving in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment with limited supervision.
- Bachelor’s degree; any combination of training, education, and experience demonstrating ability to perform essential duties may be considered.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive litigation experience.
- Certificate from an ABA‑approved paralegal program preferred.
- Experience with database file‑management systems such as iManage and other records‑management systems.
