Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department, including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws;

ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns.

The Legal Bureau seeks a qualified Paralegal Aide, II (Part‑Time) to assist with Department operations. While day‑to‑day duties will vary based on assignment, typical tasks and responsibilities of a Paralegal Aide, II assigned to the Legal Bureau may include:

  • Utilizing various NYPD systems and applications to assist in the processing and investigation of requests for Department records.
  • Examining responsive records and making recommendations as to appropriateness of disclosure.
  • Applying appropriate red actions in accordance with all applicable laws.
  • Providing administrative support to attorneys.
  • Performing data entry, copying, scanning, filing and other tasks to support attorney case work and other Bureau efforts.

Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); or
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and two years of full‑time satisfactory experience, acquired in the United States, in the performance of paralegal (legal assistant) services; or
  • A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full‑time satisfactory experience, acquired in the United States, in the performance of paralegal (legal assistant) services; or
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1', '2' or '3' above. Paralegal Certification obtained in the United States from an accredited program or from a program approved by the American Bar Association can be substituted for 12 months of experience.
