Clarkson University in northern New York State is seeking an experienced Capital Construction Manager to oversee a multi-million dollar science and engineering expansion and renovation/renewal project on campus. This is a temporary contracted position for an initial term of 2-3 years, with the possibility of an extension on a month-to-month basis as needed.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the project management related to the planning, design, and execution of this large-scale capital project, ensuring it meets the university s strategic goals, budget constraints, and schedule requirements. This role involves coordinating with internal stakeholders, external consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure project success. While an A/E firm will be responsible for the design of the envisioned project and the University has contracted with a well-qualified construction management firm, the Capital Construction Manager will coordinate, oversee, and shepherd the overall project effort.
Appointment Terms & Benefits:
* This is an annually renewable position with an expectation of the position existing for 2-3 years.

- Lead and manage the design, development, and construction of the Clarkson Engineering and Applied Sciences Educational Complex expansion and renovation project.
- Oversee project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management, ensuring adherence to the specifications outlined in the Concept Planning RFP and subsequent addenda.
- Collaborate with design team, construction team, and university leadership, faculty, and staff to align project outcomes with institutional needs, ensuring programmatic goals, research space needs, and sustainability requirements are met.
- Serve as the primary liaison between architects, engineers, construction firms, and other project partners, ensuring compliance with the deliverables outlined in the RFP.
- Ensure compliance with university policies, New York State procurement guidelines, and industry best practices, including building codes, ADA compliance, and environmental sustainability standards.
- Monitor and control project costs, ensuring adherence to approved budgets and financial reporting obligations outlined in project documents.
- Identify and mitigate project risks while ensuring timely resolution of issues, including unforeseen site conditions, regulatory changes, and schedule adjustments.
- Manage contract negotiations, procurement, and contractor performance, ensuring deliverables align with project requirements and university expectations.
- Provide regular updates and reports on project status to university leadership, including detailed reports on progress, budgetary status, and key milestones as outlined in the RFP and addenda.
- Oversee integration of sustainable and energy-efficient design and construction practices, ensuring LEED or other environmental certification requirements, where applicable.
- Review and recommend for approval payment requests for the design team as well as the construction management firm.
- Serve as an agent in consultation with the university to approve submittals inclusive of health and safety plans, permit applications, inspection reports, and design documentation.
- Teach courses in the Construction Engineering Management program as determined by the Director of that program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field OR trade certifications/licensure in a craft trade/area aligned with the aforementioned fields.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in project management for large-scale capital design and construction projects, preferably in higher education, science, or engineering sectors.
- Strong knowledge of construction management principles, budgeting, scheduling, and contract administration.
- Proficiency in relevant project management software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project, AutoCAD, or BIM tools).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Familiarity with New York State procurement regulations, federal and state building codes, and sustainability requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor s or Master s degree in a related field.
- Professional certifications such as PMP (Project Management Professional), CHFM (Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager), FMP (Facilities Management Professional), or CCM (Certified Construction Manager).
- Licensure as a PE (Professional Engineer) or RA (Registered Architect).
- Experience managing projects with multiple phases, including planning, design, and construction in compliance with university or institutional capital project requirements.
