About the JobThe ACLU seeks a full‑time position of Deputy Director of Gift Planning Administration in the Development Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role that requires in‑office attendance two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The ACLU’s Development Department is dedicated to unlocking the full potential of donors and partners. We build long‑term relationships, demonstrate impact, and manage resources responsibly.
What You’ll DoReporting to the Senior Director of Nationwide Leadership and Planned Gifts, the Deputy Director will manage the organization’s fiduciary, compliance, due diligence, and management responsibilities for charitable life‑income gifts and bequests received from trusts and estates.
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities- Lead a team consisting of one Manager and two Coordinators; oversee daily operations of the Gift Administration team.
- Monitor administration of trusts and estates, review fees, taxes, and costs in financial reports.
- Manage a charitable gift annuity fund, charitable remainder trusts, and pooled income fund, ensuring regulatory compliance and oversight of outside administrators.
- Apply knowledge of trusts and estates to resolve disputes, retain and manage outside counsel, and coordinate litigation with the ACLU’s General Counsel.
- Serve as main contact for litigation coordination with affiliates and as a representative of the ACLU to outside parties.
- Fulfill fiduciary responsibilities of the ACLU Foundation for charitable remainder trusts, including oversight of outside administrators and communication with donors and beneficiaries.
- Maintain data, reporting, and systems to provide stakeholders with revenue information.
- Improve administrative processes and workflows.
- Liaise with Revenue Operations, Finance, General Counsel, affiliates, and other stakeholders.
- Undertake special projects within the Development Department as needed.
- Be committed to advancing the mission of the ACLU.

- Collaborate respectfully toward resolving obstacles and conflicts.
- J.D. strongly preferred, with experience in trust and estate administration, mediation, and litigation.
- Leadership and supervisory experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including influence, diplomacy, and tact.
- Excellent communication skills, able to summarize complex issues for attorneys, donors, and non‑attorneys.
- Sound judgment and ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
- Attention to procedural details, facts, and figures.
- Flexibility and patience.
- Interest in tax, financial, and estate planning issues.
- Negotiation skills for complex agreements (preferred).
- Knowledge of trends in charitable giving (preferred).
- Familiarity with fundraising databases (preferred).
- Experience in large national or international nonprofits (preferred).
The ACLU offers a set salary based on geographic location. The annual salary for this position is $188,816 (Level
D), reflecting the salary for a position based in New York, NY. Salaries may be adjusted regionally if the role is authorized outside this location.
