Position: PLANT OPERATOR - Public Works [FLSA: Non-exempt; SHIFT: 8 hrs/dy, incl. wknds, on-call rotation]

EMERGENCY STATUS: REQUIRED TO REPORT

This recruitment is for a WATER Plant Operator

Compensation depends on experience.

Will pay an additional 3% above the minimum salary per year for experience, up to a maximum of five (5) years (not to include Trainee experience).

Additional pay for license (annually):

C License = $2,500

B License = $3,500

A License = $4,500

Dual-Licensed Plant Operators Receive add‑pay equal to 50% of secondary license

Operates and maintains water facility to meet regulatory compliance. Analyzes treatment processes and makes necessary adjustments to maintain regulatory standards. Enters data and maintenance of plant records, daily logs and monthly reports. Collects representative samples for lab testing and compliance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lead Operator. Reports to work for duty outside normally scheduled work hours in response to natural or man‑made disasters and emergencies.

Required to perform duties at water and field system as directed.

Operates and maintains a water treatment plant performing basic chemical and bacteriological tests.

Prepares and maintains plant operational records for the environmental compliance requirements with local, state and federal government agencies.

Collects regulatory and laboratory data for the submission of time sensitive compliance reports to Lead Operator for review.

Monitors plant for proper functioning of pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters and chemical feeders, making adjustments as necessary to maintain proper flow of water.

Makes chemical feed and treatment adjustments as necessary and replenishes treatment equipment with chemicals as needed; fills chemical tanks, changes chlorine cylinders, dons specialized personal‑protective equipment when handling chemicals.

Performs sampling and completes testing for bacteriological contaminants (Bac T) according to state certified lab guidelines.

Utilizes proper protocol on laboratory and facility equipment to ensure safety procedures are followed in emergency situations as they relate to facility malfunctions.

Arranges sampling pickup, laboratory analysis and confirmation of laboratory results; collects samples from designated points, performs basic chemical tests; interprets test results and manages responses.

Operates and inspects emergency generators for proper performance.

Provides preventative maintenance on buildings, calibrates mechanical equipment and repairs equipment as necessary; changing belts, motors, valves, piping, pumps, etc.

Serves as essential personnel during natural or man‑made disasters and emergencies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requires high school graduation or GED equivalent and six (6) months of experience in water plant operations or closely‑related experience. Requires a Class C or higher State FDEP Water State of Florida license. Requires a valid driver's license (must obtain Florida driver license within 30 days of employment). Must be able to work shift and weekend hours. Subject to on‑call rotation.

Must be able to serve on the City’s Emergency Management Team as essential personnel.

Experience performing sampling and completing testing for bacteriological contaminants (Bac T) according to state‑certified laboratory guidelines is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in a treatment plant.

General knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with plant operations and related activities and the necessary precautions.

General knowledge of chemistry as applied to treatment facilities.

Knowledge and ability to follow common standard operating procedures (SOP) needed to meet laboratory compliance reporting.
