Provide machining services to the R/D groups, primarily the Metals and Combustion Applications Group. Working at the Linde Technology Center, interacts with Linde engineers and technicians, reviewing drawings or instructions to understand specifications of work to create prototype pieces used to develop custom equipment for development and testing. Plans and executes the sequence of machining steps using lathes, milling machines, shapers, and other such tools towards the completion of the work.
Takes measurements and marks materials for cutting or shaping and to ensure conformance to specifications. Is always observant of safe shop operating practices.
- Reviews samples, drawings, or instructions to understand specifications of work. Calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
Evaluates the work and provides a reasonable estimate of the time required to complete - offering workarounds where appropriate to reduce time and cost.
Plans the sequence of machining steps necessary for the completion of the job.
Selects appropriate machines, sets-up, adjusts and operates basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
Monitors machine while working and adjusts the feed rate and speed as appropriate for the materials being machined to maintain temperature and identify issues.
Is skilled in the design and use of, and fabricates jigs, tooling, and templates as necessary to facilitate the machining of complex parts and shapes. Maintains inventory of tooling, jigs and fixtures.
Performs additional machining tasks such as cutting, heat-treating, polishing, filing, grinding, drilling etc. as necessary depending on the availability of the appropriate tools and machines.
Maintains a log of requested work and keeps accurate records of completed work including timesheets.
Manages workload to balance multiple long‑lead projects with daily short‑term requests.
Practices safety always.
OtherDesirable Experience / Capabilities:
- Experience working with carbon steel, stainless steel, and specialty alloys such as Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy, Monel, etc. as well as ceramics, Teflon, and plastics.
- Programs and uses CNC milling machines and lathes on jobs where manual machines are not suitable.
Education & Experience:
- Experience using and/or programming semi‑automated or automated tools and shop machines is highly desirable.
- Two (2) or more years manual lathe and vertical milling experience required.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches.
- Able to work with tight tolerances and be able to use precision measuring equipment such as micrometers and calipers.
- Complex machining functions requiring average to above‑average skill and ability required.
