Non-Profit & Social Impact
Position description
One Project is a nonprofit building infrastructure for a new economy where resources serve people and planet, not profit. We partner with the rising global movement for economic democracy to build core technology, mobilize catalytic resources, and show the world that a better system is possible today.
Why do we need a new economy
Our current economic system incentivizes profit above all else. So when we see ecological degradation, addictive products, exploitative tech, and runaway inequality, these aren't just random problems—they're predictable outcomes of the system's incentives. Meanwhile, things that truly matter to people — safe and thriving communities, health, access to leisure time, a healthy environment — are chronically underfunded despite our unprecedented collective wealth.
Our history and role
We are not alone in this realization. All around the world, there is a growing ecosystem of communities, movements, and experts who are already working towards a just transition to a new economy. Thousands of communities worldwide already govern resources democratically, from cooperative businesses to community land trusts to participatory budgets, achieving remarkable outcomes where people and the planet thrive. It's happening now from California to Kenya, Boston to Brazil.
One Project currently supports a network of 80+ organizations and has committed $63 million to date to strengthen this ecosystem, changing the story about what's economically possible for all of us.
In our next phase, One Project seeks to integrate technology, capital, narrative, and movement-building in a unified approach.
What is Common?
At the heart of our contribution is Common, which we're developing to serve as the digital backbone for economic democracy. Common is a digital platform that connects people, organizations, and resources to coordinate and grow economic democracy to global scale. Designed through years of deep collaboration and experimentation with visionary communities, Common addresses real unmet needs—enabling communities to attract resources and decide together how to use them based on shared values.
Through Common, organizers, entrepreneurs, funders, and members of any community can create new forms of cooperation that aren't possible in the current system. We're starting by supporting existing community-led organizations and participatory funds worldwide. As Common grows, it will enable more forms of economic cooperation, helping us transition from experiments to an interconnected alternative system to the current economy.
