DescriptionMISSION
The Associates Board expands educational and career opportunities for Breakthrough New York students by growing the organization’s corporate and volunteer network and raising funds among emerging New York City philanthropists.
VISION
With sustainable resources and connections, Breakthrough New York students can access the educational and career pathway of their choosing.
Associates Board members actively contribute in many ways—from organizing career events for BTNY college students to creating internship pathways and offering one‑on‑one mentorship—while also bringing their own ideas and initiatives to life in support of our students.
CHARGE
Together, the Board will:
- Champion and amplify awareness about Breakthrough New York among emerging leaders
- Expand Breakthrough New York’s corporate and civic partnerships to increase opportunities for Breakthrough New York students
- Actively support the Board’s collective effort to raise $60,000+ annually through an annual fundraising
STRUCTURE & COMPOSITION
- Up to 20 members serving a three‑year term
- Leadership (one‑year term, with opportunity to renew, up to three years, maximum)

Manages board’s alignment with organizational values and goals, and organizes board’s progress towards collective and individual goals. - Vice Chair
:
Supports management of board members, including onboarding, tracking progress towards individual goals, and supporting administrative tasks. - Committee Chairs

: help Board members activate networks for the benefit of Breakthrough students and support students in internship and career searches - Membership & Recruitment: identify and nominate potential Board candidates

Roles and Responsibilities
Each individual member commits to:
- Attend quarterly meetings and serve on at least one committee
- Donate or raise at least $5,000/year from personal and professional networks
- Volunteer for at least one volunteer opportunity per year
- Promote Breakthrough New York and partnership opportunities to personal and professional networks
Each Associates Board member demonstrates:
- A deep belief in educational equity and excellence and Breakthrough New York’s mission of empowering students from low‑income communities to achieve college educations and meaningful careers
- A commitment to centering student agency and diversifying the future workforce
- Knowledge of corporate social responsibility within their industry and the capacity to navigate and advocate for opportunities accordingly
- Strong networking and relationship‑building skills, and the capacity to influence others to support Breakthrough New York
Given these responsibilities and the charge of the organization, we prefer (yet don’t require) candidates with:
- A Bachelor's degree
- At least 3 years of work experience
- Demonstrated leadership and influence within industry and community
